Who we are

3-6-17 - Bembridge Windmill_family selfie_Me and Mine June copy 4BHi there, thank you for stopping by to find out a little bit more about us.

My name is Nic and I write about life in Gloucester with my husband George, sons Euan and Luca and last remaining cat Billy.

I started blogging in 2009 to document our gardening adventures as new allotment holders.  I continued writing through years of infertility, a life in limbo and eventually parenting a newborn.  Now my boys are 5 and 9 I’ve finally worked out what I’d like to do to live life on purpose.  I am now a qualified Aromatherapist offering therapeutic massage to support people with their wellbeing.

My blog archive from 2009 – 2017 is full of posts about growing and cooking allotment produce, reflecting on parenthood and creating product reviews .   In 2018 I began writing about grief and my experience of losing my Mum.  In 2019 I started my journey as a Wellbeing Advisor with Weleda and wrote about toxic free personal care and making eco-friendly choices.  These days (2021) I snap pictures daily but write rarely as Mum life with small boys and growing a new business occupy most of my time!

warm wishes, Nic x

Taking photos with a decent digital camera has been so inspiring but I’m just sharing the stories of the amazing allotment folk.
You’re one too you know and a cuppa is long overdue. If you’re ever in town on a Saturday morning Robin usually starts brewing the tea about 10.30am….

    Hi again Nic!

I first found your blog when I googled ‘Hedgerow Jelly’ when I was making it – and yes, we seem to share a passion for foraging and for Pam Corbin (she rocks!).

Just noticed that you live in Gloucester – I grew up in Ross-on-Wye, so not too far from you. However, with a military husband I find myself living all over the place now, though I’d love to go back to Herefordshire one day.

I read your post about St Albans Cathedral – you’d enjoy Gloucester Cathedral if you do ever find yourself over this way.

    Hi Nic

Following The Big Bulb Plant’s continued success, The International Flower Bulb Centre and the Eden Project are collaborating for the third year running, in order to encourage schools and neighbourhoods to get together this autumn and plant spring flowering bulbs in their communities.

Plantings can take place anytime between 1st October and 30th November and bulbs can be plotted anywhere, from school fields to back gardens. If every person contributes, a community can be transformed.

This year the plant will be launched at Westfield London where BBC Gardener’s World Toby Buckland, Blue Peter’s Chris Collins and the team from Eden Project will be taking workshops and Q&A sessions. We will also be handing out over 500 free boxes of Narcissus ‘Thalia’, the 2011 ‘Spring Flowering Bulb of the Year’.

I was wandering if this would be of interest for your readers on this blog?

I have a PR for more details if you require! I apologise I would have sent this to you in an email but I did not come accross one.

I would love to know your thoughts.

    Best wishes

    Freya

Hi Caroline, thanks for stopping by.
As I quoted the saying I must have read it somewhere and can’t take credit for it (if there had been an ‘author’ I would have referenced it) so I think it’s just a more modern, poetic expression for the the latin phrase ”Ego borage gaudia semper ago” which I read about in Jekka McVicars Herb Book. She says the Greeks and Romans regarded borage as both comforting and imparting courage and the phrase above was quoted in Gerard’s herbal book. If you google something like ‘borage brings courage’ you might get some more interesting links.
cheerio and all the best with the calendar, N

I visited St Anthony's well again today. We were I visited St Anthony's well again today. We were a smaller group than planned thanks to Covid, broken down cars and recovery from surgery. Nevertheless it's kind of special that each visit is unique and we were blessed with beautiful sunshine.
.
Today we were a band of 3 (versus 8 for my birthday dio in Feb). It was as just me dipping with the company of my friend Sophie. Lovely Suzanne drove and took her teeny chiuahua for a walk. There were a couple of fallen trees from February's storm but it was as beautiful and tranquil as ever.
.
My daily cold showers made getting in quickly much easier. I stayed in for about 10 minutes as you can't really keep warm by swimming about. I was ever grateful for my friend Kate's gloves and socks!
.
ps. That lovely hound is Ruby, the dog of the dipper who was getting our just as we arrived. I loved her story of a persistent problem with her shoulder that finally resolved when she came for a dip 10 days in a row. The wonder of cold water therapy x

Have you heard of facial cupping? I hadn't either Have you heard of facial cupping? I hadn't either until last summer I came across Sakina's page, The Facial Cupping Expert. Sakina was just launching a professionally accredited course and I decided to order the cup set to try on myself before deciding if it was something I wanted to offer to my clients.
.
Fast forward to 2022 and I haven't got past week one with getting into a routine with my cups (crazy huh, when every day I see brilliant posts and before/after pictures from Sakina). It's simply a matter of adjusting my night time routine but Jan/Feb energy was low and it was another thing I didn't have head space or time for. Or so I thought, ageing stops for no one!
.
I reached out to Sakina to see if she'd be interested in having a chat about the cups and how they can be used for specific target areas. I'd struggled to take a before picture and thought a before/after video might be a fun alternative. I'm also much better with accountability when I say to someone else "I'm going to do this" than when just committing to myself!
.
So last week we had a chat and you can see it here on YouTube https://youtu.be/5lOTMOdKaMs . I've taken a before photo from the day after our interview and will catch up again in about a months time. I hope to be surprised by the changes from such a simple adjustment to my skincare routine (I expect Sakina will not be!).
.
To find out more about facial cupping visit @thefacialcuppingexpert . If you're a therapist and you'd like details about the professional course let me know as Sakina is just setting up an affiliate scheme and it's a good way to test out whether people really do engage with info on IG!

My husband asked me when Mother's Day is earlier. My husband asked me when Mother's Day is earlier. "I've been seeing cards and posters everywhere for so long I thought I might have missed it". I assured him he hadn't and that I would have made my dissatisfaction clear if the day has passed without acknowledgement. (It took me so long to become a Mother that this day is the one event in the year that I embrace the Hallmark sentiments and expect a card). It has become all the more important to me since I no longer have my own Mum here to celebrate with.
.
So for any partners out there wondering how to say "I appreciate everything you do for our children" or "we love you Mum" from the kids, here are some ideas for you. There's something for every budget and I can put together gift bundles too.

I also think as Mum's we should not be afraid of celebrating ourselves so if you feel like treating yourself to some downtime I also have gift vouchers available for Aromatherapy massage.

My friend, mentor and yoga teacher @amandajbucher My friend, mentor and yoga teacher @amandajbucher is offering a Spring Cleanse this week in the run up to the Spring Equinox on the 20th. It's the kick up the bum I need to stop trying to juggle so much and claim some time for myself. So I've planned in daily yoga, nature walks and rest alongside a conscious effort to nourish my body with simple cleansing foods. For just a week dairy, grains, meat and fish are out and tonnes of veg and some fruits are in. It will be a mental challenge getting organised but I'm sure I will feel better for it and enjoy journeying through the week with others under Amanda's gentle guidance.
.
Here are some of the cleansing methods we'll be using alongside the alkalising diet:
.
💚 Starting the day with birch juice. Birch has been used for centuries for  purification and is renowned for its powerful cleansing properties. Packed with flavanoids which encourage the body to flush out toxins, birch leaf extract helps to restore skin radiance from both inside and out. Weleda have been making birch juice since 1924 to help support the body's natural healing process.
.
💚 Body brushing to help stimulate the lymphatic system. Just a few minutes daily before your shower enlivens the skin, boosts the immune system and helps the body to clear toxins
.
💚 Showering with birxh scrub and massaging with birch cellulite oil. For all the reasons birch juice is effective internally we apply birch oil externally. Cellulite develops naturally – but that doesn’t mean you have to keep it! Extracts from organically grown young birch leaves, rosemary and butcher’s broom stimulate the skin’s metabolism. They’re blended with active carrier oils, including vitamin rich wheatgerm and moisturising jojoba. Invigorating grapefruit and cypress oils for fragrance – everything in this oil is here for a purpose. And it works.
.
If you'd like to spring cleanse the natural way Weleda are offering their annual birch bundle to help you. Save £13 on the total cost of the products (swipe right to see what you get for £49).

If you've ever attended one of my wellness circles you'll know all about the importance of soaking your feet. Physically it's wonderful for the skin and general foot health to soak and then massage the feet. But mentally it's invaluable as it grounds you and brings busy head energy back down into your body. I certainly need that when the whirl of life and Mum juggle is in full force.
.
I planned to host some circles in person and online this week but found my diary spaces filling up with massage bookings instead. How wonderful is that, the universe and you responding to my new moon intention setting to help more people in my community 💕
.
I'm typing this as I soak (yes that's my view). And when I put my phone down I'll be picking up the fabulous Weleda Wellness Everyday book. So on that note, nighty night lovelies x

Have you tried the new Skin Food body lotion yet? Have you tried the new Skin Food body lotion yet? This is what the Editor of JUNO magazine, Saffia Farr, had to say about it:
.
"This is a fantastic body lotion. It's based on the classic Weleda Skin Food but is much thinner, so it applies easily across the skin and absorbs well. It's made with sweet orange and lavender and has the warm and vanillic notes of benzoin resin' so it still has the wonderful, unique citrus scent of Skin Food, which I really like. Even though it's thinner, it is still an intensive moisturiser and it has helped my skin through the winter."

We sleep on the floor mattresses so I may not have a bedside table but I most definitely have a book pile. This is currently it!

I'm full of cautionary tales at the moment! After I'm full of cautionary tales at the moment! After last week's food poisoning story, my example this week of putting knowledge into practice is with burns. I'm sharing this not so much to sing the praises of the products I use but in the hope that you may never need to use them by not getting burned in the first place!
.
I was having a lovely bath last night with candles lit in glass jars while reading my book. After about an hour I was just thinking about getting out when I heard a pop and crack and a scorching hot piece of glass landed on me. I shot up and it fell into the water and I realised one of the candle glasses was broken. I hadn't noticed that the wax inside was pooling on one side so the heat from it was in direct contact with the glass. It obviously got too hot for the glass to handle.
.
I leapt into action to first cool the skin but it's not so easy to run your torso under a tap for 10 minutes like you would a hand! So I got dressed and used a wrapped ice pack. I applied lavender essential oil to the burn and took the homeopathic remedy Cantharis. I went to bed with my ice pack and applied the lavender oil a couple more times in the night when I woke. In the morning I applied combudoron ointment which is a blend of arnica and nettles to help with the sting and heat. Today I've hardly noticed it - it's only sore if I touch it so I'm not! I don't think it's going to blister and I'm happy the skin beneath is intact. I'm supremely grateful it's a burn I'm dealing with and not a cut from flying glass.
.
Have you heard of using lavender essential oil to treat burns? It's one of only two essential oils you can apply to the skin neat (the other is tea tree) and it's where the art of aromatherapy is said to begin. In 1910 a French chemist called Gattefosse was badly burned on his hands when a glass flask he was using exploded. He saw miraculous healing of his burns, with no subsequent scarring, when he applied lavender oil. He became even more resolved to continue his experiments extracting essential oils. Thank goodness he did so that we have amazing knowledge of how plant oils can heal.

We've been married for 23 years and have never rea We've been married for 23 years and have never really gone in for celebrating Valentines Day. We've always chosen time together over gifts. As we get older and couple time is more rare I completely love the unconditional love of small gestures. Like running the bath for me and knowing what I like added to it. Making me a cup of tea. Getting me ice packs to relieve a migraine. All love tokens that cost nothing but mean so much
.
I know some people put a lot of care into coming up with new gift ideas each year which is beautiful. For others buying something they know their partner already loves is the ultimate "I love you and I know you love this so I don't want you to run out".
.
If I can help with any gift ideas do let me know. I have beautiful Weleda oils and lotions in stock from our signature ranges of wild rose, pomegranate, seabuckthorn and citrus. I have wellbeing vouchers for Aromatherapy treatments and can put together gift sets according to your budget with a mix of Weleda products and Tisserand or Amphora Aromatics aromatherapy gifts.
.
ps. I know Valentines Day can be hard for people without someone to share it with, if that's what they'd like. I'm sending you love and have samples I'm happy to gift you if you'd like to give yourself some love this week x

I'm beginning to feel a bit more human after poiso I'm beginning to feel a bit more human after poisoning myself with way-past-it mushrooms yesterday! I'm so grateful for my natural remedies in times of need. And especially thankful for this simple homeopathy guide when my head is too fuzzy from sickness to think straight!
.
I was so sick yesterday and while nausea can make you really sensitive to smells, particularly food ones, I always find comfort in the fragrances I know and love. So as I turned in for bed I still massaged a little wild rose oil into my neck and shoulders. My peppermint oil supported me through the drilling headache. And this morning's bath was accompanied by my Reiki incense. Aromas are so evocative and soothing in times of need!
.
What helps you when you're sick?
