trialling toddler proof water bottles (an OXO Tot review)

Any parent will tell you that leak proof cups are rarely that and waterproof bibs always end up as wet on the inside as they do on the outside. It’s such a talent these small ones have for creating a mess! Baby L is no different of course but, unlike when his brother E was a small baby, we do have a leak proof cup for him to shake about and drop from the high chair. The OXO Good Grips sippy cup withstands all shaking challenges and L only ends up soaked still because he loves to glugg and then squirt the water out through his gappy front teeth!

The OXO Good grips sippy cup has two soft grippy handles which L mastered surprisingly quickly and these simply click onto the bottom of the cup and can be removed easily for washing. In fact our handles are removed several times a day as they ping off when dropped from the high chair but despite the many flings there is no sign of damage to the cup yet (although the force of the impact which is stronger than a sip does make the floor wet).
Our big boy E took to using his blue OXO Good Grips twist top bottle when he was 1.5 years old.  L already loves the green one too, mastering the straw at just 9 months old!  The OXO Good Grips Twist top bottle is really handy for when I can’t give L a sippy cup because there’s no room for him to tip his head back, like travelling in the car. For the same reason E likes it at bedtime because he can drink from it lying down.

Of course the great thing about the twist top bottle is that it’s fab for any age (I take it swimming and would love it in a larger size). E takes a water bottle into school to avoid night time wakings with leg cramps and it’s good to know the twist top bottle won’t leak into his book bag. It has a lovely grippy handle so we do tend to carry it just in case E doesn’t twist the top right round – leaks do happen due to user error sometimes! We notice such a difference in energy levels and concentration on the days E forgets to take a water bottle in so it’s great he loves his bottle so much (especially with ice in which is an easy fun add-in through the wide necked top).

So when L is not flinging his water bottle around you can imagine the flare with which he eats his food. The base of L’s highchair is always peppered with flung food for us to tread into the floor! We keep this OXO compact dustpan and brush close to hand after a quick sweep around. It’s so cute that L likes to try and clean up after himself and it’s just right for small hands! (forgive me for exercising quality control on my photos when I just could not make the daily food mess on our kitchen floor look good!)

When it’s really messy and we have to call in the big guns (this OXO Butterfly mop) it takes no time at all to clean up. This mop makes getting into all the awkward corners easy and with little effort wipes away even the stickiest mess (porridge the prime culprit there). It’s just as well as L’s really perfecting his throwing arm!

Disclosure: I was sent these OXO Good Grips products to try. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.

  • OXO Tot big kid water bottle review | Nip it in the bud
    April 12, 2018

[…] This twist top water bottle is from OXO Tot big kid range and marketed as suitable from 2 years (guessing this is when little hands may be able to twist the top themselves).  E has been using his quite happily as a 1.5 year old and it lives up to it’s claim of being non-spill while having an easy suck soft straw.  The non-slip handle is great for very grabable for little fingers and attaching it to the buggy so you always have it to hand (and doesn’t get lost when discarded with gay abandon).   The large opening makes filling, cleaning and adding ice easy and the lid twists closed to keep the straw clean when not in use.   Best of all it holds 350ml and is made of BPA free materials. E never leaves home without his big kid bottle now! 2017 update:  3 years later Euan’s baby brother was in a need of a new drinking cup and we started him on the twist top bottle even younger than Euan was in this post.  At just 9 months old Luca had no trouble drinking from the straw (the 18 months+ age on the packaging is a guide for ease of use and not a safety issue for younger babies).  You can read that review, which includes the OXO Tot sippy cup too, here. […]

The boys and I took a walk to beautiful Lassington The boys and I took a walk to beautiful Lassington Woods and the hill that was covered in snow just a month ago. We loved seeing all the hand made signs warning us where to walk to protect the bluebells. I'm so grateful for this week's sunny spells.
.
Hope you've been able to get out and soak up the hope of new life and brighter days emerging x

I had a gorgeous bimble on Haresfield Beacon with I had a gorgeous bimble on Haresfield Beacon with the boys yesterday. We parked at our favourite Standish Woods and walked the 30 minutes to the top. We took a wrong path at one point and had to scramble like mountain goats up the side of the hill (absolutely the highlight, such fun!). While Euan and I took some pictures on the trig point Luca took himself off to admire the view.
.
The boys were amazing with running around and walking all the way back too. They didn't complain until the final uphill stretch but rightly so as it was hard going. It's so good to get outside and it's a long time since my body has felt hot and our of breath from exertion!

We were blessed with sunshine for our walk on Stinchcombe Hill. The boys loved the bunkers on the golf course and we were able to get some gorgeous food to take out afterwards from @leafandground (such a treat to be cooked for). Of course the best birthday present was bunking off school work for the day! (For Euan that is, I'm now cracking open my anatomy folder for an hour for tomorrow's college session while G gets the boys to bed).
Last week I felt overwhelmed, exhausted and frustr Last week I felt overwhelmed, exhausted and frustrated. Home schooling children while trying to fulfil all my other commitments wasn't working out so well. I realised this when robbing from my sleep bank resulted in the tell tale headaches that lead to a migraine.
.
This week, with the start of a new month, I resolved to prioritise rest (everything gets ugly on rubbish sleep!). I need 8 hours sleep. I need quiet time to stretch (without children climbing on me or asking for food!). I need to walk in nature. I need to connect with people outside my family, as Nic, not always as Mum to Euan and Luca. And sometimes I need to moan, to stop holding everything, to let the stagnant energy out and the fresh loving energy in.
.
I drew up a list of what supports a headache free life and started ticking things off (I did this on day 3 so have no guilt about those blank boxes at the start of the month!). I'm resolved to keep up the ticks. I expect there will be days with gaps (like today's rain thwarting a nature walk) but I'm ok with that too.
.
The day I drew up my tracker I also decided to draw a cards from my Lunar cycle oracle cards deck and the Universe has your back. I think they confirmed I'm on the right track. Taking care of your body can never be a bad option to go with!!!

Snow doesn't stick in the city so today we found a hill. George's Dad had made the boys a sledge from an old car seat. What fab recycling 😊🛷
