I wasn’t sure what to expect when Braun asked us to review their latest high precision thermometer. It’s only a year since we reviewed the last one and discovered the benefits of in-ear thermometers and Braun’s innovative technology as the brand most often recommended by Doctors. I did warn them we might not have much more to say but they kindly sent us the new Braun Thermoscan 7 anyway. They must have had a secret smile to themselves having been coy about mentioning two impressive new features.
It seems the developers at Braun listened to parents feedback and have included a backlit display on the new model. They’ve gone one step further though in creating an illumniated colour coded display to help interpret the temperature readings: green for a normal temperature (as with E’s above), yellow for an elevated temperature and red for a high temperature. This helpful feature is paired with the development of an age adjustable setting (look carefully in temperature reading photo and you’ll see a crawling baby symbol). Let me explain, the definition of fever changes with age. The Braun Thermoscan 7 has been designed to take the guesswork out of monitoring your child’s health because a normal temperature range in a 4 year old would be considered a fever in newborn.
The Braun Thermoscan 7 enables you to set the age of your child (newborn, 3 months to 3 years, 3 yrs to adult) so you can quickly and easily interpret the severity of the temperature reading. It’s simple to use (as demonstrated by Dr E below) giving fast and accurate readings thanks to the use of the lens filter which activates the pre-warming of the tip to 34°c.
In three simple steps (setting the age, taking the temperature, interpreting the colour coded results) you have all the assurance you need to take the worry out of dealing with a feverish child. I was pleased to see that the colour coding allows for a measure of caution as much of what you read as a parent suggests a temperature of 38c as an immediate alarm bell. E had a viral infection when he was 15 months old with a temperature that reached 38.8c. We were quite measured in our response to it preferring to focus on the severity of E’s symptoms than his temperature and Dr Ranj who endorses the Braun Thermometer range advocates this too. His ”Winter health check for kids” advice to parents recommends ‘‘trusting your instincts”, not panicking about a number and watching and waiting. He suggests if you are worried, think your child is not getting better or needs medical attention never hesitate to see a GP. Dr E’s advice to me last time I had a fever was ”have a bath, go to Nana and Grandads house, have a party”.
If you’d like more information about using the Braun Thermoscan thermometer here’s the official video from Braun. Below is E’s alternative video for how Doctors might find some light relief after a long day!
Disclosure: I was sent the Braun Thermoscan for the purposes of this review. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.
that sounds really useful to have the colour coded temperatures – I have not had many temperatures with sylvia – in fact we bought a braun thermometer when she was newborn and well over 5 years later we have only just bought a new set of the covers for the thermometer. And I didn’t know about how temperatures change with age
Sounds like every home should have one.
a Braun thermometer or a Dr E?
New 2 features seems good for this thermometer. great reviews.
