At this time of year I’m usually gathering ingredients for chutney making: using up a glut of courgettes or beetroot or damsons. With no allotment grown veggies this year I’m using up my preserve stores instead and tripping into memories of seasonal preserving with scents of nostalgia from freshly opened jars of jam and chutney. Last week we popped open the jar of jam made with these foraged plums to create doughnut style cupcakes.
I don’t bake often if I’m honest because
a) 10 cup cakes disappear too quickly in our house, not naming any names, so not the best diet choice except for special occasions
b) I seem to create ridiculous amounts of washing up. Even when E helps it doubles the amount of cookery time (oh, perhaps that’s where I’m going wrong?)
For our doughnut like cupcakes we kept it simple with a ”weight of 2 eggs” Granny style cake mix and minimal washing up with our new OXO Good Grips hand held mixer.
E thoroughly enjoyed whisking up the eggs but had to admit defeat when I added the butter and sugar (admittedly it’s not really meant for solid ingredients but
we I enjoyed playing with it too much to stop there). Thanks to the sturdiness of our OXO Good Grips stainless steel mixing bowl and its high sides the ingredients stayed inside the bowl! I’ve lost count of the number of previous spillages we’ve had when an excited E has made an sudden grab for our plastic bowl. This stainless steel bowl has a terrific grippy non-slip rubber base so would take quite a swipe to up end it
Looking for more things we could get whisk happy with we also baked a salmon and broccoli quiche for tea and then used the mixing bowl for our side salad.
We’re really quite addicted to using this bowl now, E especially so as a music making hat as he sits on the kitchen floor tapping it with a toy.
Don’t take my word for how much this bowl has transformed meal making in our kitchen; try it for yourself (the mixing and baking part, hat wearing optional) and if a bowl does find it’s way into your kitchen I’d love to hear what other uses you find for it.
