”Would you like to review some new varieties of Welch’s juice?’‘ is not the sort of question that requires much thinking. I hadn’t come across Welch’s Juice before but I never say no to free food! We were pleasantly surprised when we received 3 different flavours to try: White Grape and Raspberry, Rose Grape light and Purple Grape light (with 50% less sugar). Flavour wise we enjoyed them all – the Rose in particular would pass very nicely as a non-alcoholic wine with a little sparkling water or lemondate added. As with all juices we watered them down so they weren’t as sweet (just our personal preference) and this was especially important as unlike pure juices these varieties have added sugar and sweeteners. The upside of that is anyone following a calorie controlled diet can enjoy a 100ml glass of Welch’s light juices for just 24 calories. I’ve been dabbling with the 5:2 diet (see Jac’s Tinned Tomatoes post about what it is and some delicious calorie calculated recipe ideas) so on a fast day a 50% watered down glass of Welch’s would barely make a dent at 12 calories.
I wanted to create something to eat with our juice and plumped for poached pears having made them recently using up a bottle of mulled wine from several Christmases ago. I poured a litre of Purple Grape light into the slow cooker, added a sachet of mulled wine spices and 6 peeled pears and left it on high for 6 hours. As they were non-alcoholic I didn’t need to add any sugar and E was able to sample them. They turned out really well and E liked them despite finding it tricky to hold the slippery juice soaked pear.
I don’t think I’d choose to buy these particular varieties as I tend to steer clear of anything with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. But having enjoyed the flavours I’d certainly look out for Welch’s 100% juice range next time I’m in the supermarket, with Rose at the top of my list.
