This time last week was a beautiful sunny autumnal day. Perfect weather for my final trip to the allotment this year. Mum came to help bring in the last of the harvest (carrots, beets, kale, rocket and sprouting) and we marvelled at how much had been achieved since we began preparing the ground in February.
By the time I’d cleaned up the carrots and sifted out the bug nibbled ones we were left with half of what we’d picked. They may not have looked especially pretty but they still tasted fabulous.
Our allotment harvest would have been paltry this year if my mum and dad had not been so willing to help out (even visiting the plot without me when I was too sick to join them). I owe a debt of gratitude to them, especially on the days when mum also provided lunch afterwards. Like last week when we hungrily tucked into her delicious home-made vegetable quiche with salad and my green tomato chutney. Family eh, where would we be without one?
Come again

Quote (from your mum); my pleasure dear. (unquote)
Allotments do need those extra willing hands from time to time! Your carrot harvest looks great, we found also that after cleaning and culling we had a lot less than it looked at first sight.
Dad – hoorah!
Peggy – If allotment gardening teaches you anything it’s the lesson of quality over quantity every time :o)
I think all allotment holders require help and support – that looks like a fine last harvest. Enjoy!
