Bilbo at The View from Bag End has been writing about her industrial scale bulb planting exercise this week. A whopping 675 bulbs planted in a flower bed that faces away from her garden and out onto the road. Without realising it Bilbo has made a massive contribution towards a nationwide campaign called The Big Bulb Plant that aims to brighten up communities through the planting of spring bulbs.
The Big Bulb Plant is a joint initiative between The Eden Project and The Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Centre and they’d like you to choose a day between 1 September and 30 November to get your hands dirty and plant some bulbs.
”We want YOU to work together, have fun and plant spring bulbs with your neighbours to give your surroundings a makeover. Plant bulbs in a public area that is in need of an uplift or get every family on the street to plant bulbs in a container and pop it on the doorstep. The planting of spring flowering bulbs will make a huge difference and transform the aesthetics of the community come spring time!
Why not recycle unwanted items such as old tyres, watering cans, shoes, pots and pans e.t.c and use them as containers in which to plant spring bulbs – It does NOT have to cost a lot of money to COLOUR THE COMMUNITY!’
You can download step-by-step planting guides, quizzes and posters from the Big Bulb Plant website. Or if like me you prefer to learn by watching then doing this video will steer you through the basics of bulb planting and trying out some interesting planting ideas… I’d been thinking about planting purple irises so what better excuse than this?
