Lester’s onions are legendary on the allotment. His onions are enormous, sweet and don’t seem to rot as easily as anyone else’s. He says it’s because they’re a Japanese variety. Lester harvested his onions on the hottest day of the year last week and filled 30 large buckets. This morning he was rotavating the cleared ground and found a couple of dozen stray onions. I was passing at just the right time and parted company from him with the entire bucket. I left it in the shed to share with Pat and Robin and went off to see if I had anything to offer in return.
